These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of Focus Ex: the browser extension ("Extension"), the Focus Reader web app ("Web App"), the mobile app ("Mobile App") and the Supporter Plan, together the "Service". By installing or using any part of the Service, or by creating an account, you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy.
You must be at least 16 years old (or 13 years old in the United States) to use the Service. By using Focus Ex, you represent that you meet this age requirement. If you are under the required age, you may not install or use the Service.
Focus Ex enhances reading attention through text transformations and interaction features including skimming mode, deep reading mode, sentence-level navigation, and text customization. The Web App and the Mobile App let you keep a library of articles, documents and ebooks that you save or upload, read them with the same reading modes, and keep highlights, reading progress and statistics in your account. You may also connect third-party reading services (such as Readwise) to import links you saved there. Paid users gain access to premium AI-powered features including text summarization, explanation, and content search ("Find me" mode), limited to 40 requests per month.
We collect and store certain user data to provide Focus Ex's functionality. For authenticated users, we store email addresses, user IDs, names (if provided), preferences, reading analytics, and subscription information in Firebase Firestore. Usage data including feature interactions and website domains is sent to Mixpanel for analytics. For AI features, article text and user prompts are sent to OpenAI for processing; OpenAI does not retain this data after processing. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for complete details on data collection, storage, and your rights.
The Extension is free to install and use with basic features. The Supporter Plan ($3/month at the time of writing; the current price is shown before you subscribe) includes the Web App and the Mobile App, all reading modes and the premium AI-powered features (summarization, explanation, and content search). Access to the Web App and the Mobile App requires the Supporter Plan or the free trial. New accounts receive a 30-day free trial period; subscribing during the trial costs nothing until the trial ends. After the trial, subscriptions renew monthly. AI features are limited to 40 requests per month, resetting each billing period. The renewal date can be checked via the Stripe page accessible from the Account page of the Web App or the "Account" tab of the extension. Subscriptions are currently purchased on the web; the Mobile App does not sell subscriptions. Users can cancel their subscription anytime through Stripe; access to premium features continues until the end of the current billing period.
Consumer Protection Disclaimer: Nothing in these Terms limits your statutory consumer rights. If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, it shall not affect the enforceability of the remaining provisions.
Third-Party Liability: Focus Ex uses third-party services including OpenAI for AI-powered features, Stripe for payment processing, Firebase and Google Cloud for authentication, data storage and processing, Brevo for email, and Mixpanel and Google Analytics for analytics (only if you allow it). Services you connect yourself, such as Readwise, are governed by their own terms. While we ensure secure data transfer and compliance, Focus Ex cannot accept liability for issues directly caused by these third-party services. The Web App is in a beta phase; features may change or be unavailable, and you should keep your own copy of important documents.
Ownership of Content: All intellectual property rights related to Focus Ex, including design, code, and features, are owned by Szabolcs Vatány. Unauthorized reproduction, modification, or redistribution of the Service is prohibited. This does not affect Your Content.
User Restrictions: Users are strictly prohibited from reverse-engineering, decompiling, or attempting to derive the source code of the Service.
We may update these Terms. Continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Hungary. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms will be resolved under Hungarian jurisdiction.
Notification of updates to these Terms and Conditions will be displayed prominently on the news popup within the extension and in the Web App. Registered users will also be informed via email.
